Across North America voluntary producer organizations work hard to promote no-till systems and other practices that provide economic benefits as well as environmental benefits to their regions. These organizations share similar missions and goals, encounter similar challenges and struggle with all too common problems.
Today a growing number of these groups are forming a communication network that will strengthen not only individual efforts but also the shared goal of increasing conservation in agriculture. Coordination of this effort is provided by Conservation Technology Information Center (CTIC). www.conservationinformation.org
Participating organizations and advisors will share information, respond to questions from others quickly and with honesty, participate regularly in dialogue, alert others to relevant opportunities, events, and provide social and moral support. With ideas, insights and suggestions contributed by all, we will be able to build a strong network of connected groups that exchange information, collaborate on events and projects, distribute common messages about the importance of conservation and speak with a strong voice about the need for support of conservation at all levels.
Conference Calls Every month, CTIC hosts and facilitates a conference call for the Network. Participating organizations and partners join the call to share information, exchange ideas and work together to build and strengthen the network. Notes from each of the calls can be accessed HERE. If you are interested in joining the monthly discussions, please email CTIC.
Organizations
Alberta Reduced Tillage LINKAGES Established 1994
Reduced Tillage LINKAGES (RTL) is an extension organization that focuses on increasing the adoption of sustainable production systems, based on reduced tillage, by Alberta farmers and ranchers. The program is a partnership with broad-based farmer, industry, educational, wildlife, and government support and employs five agronomists.
The purpose of the Conservation Tillage Workgroup is to 1) develop knowledge and exchange information on conservation tillage production systems, 2) coordinate related research and extension programs, 3) respond to needs for information on reduced tillage production alternatives, and 4) plan and conduct statewide and regional conferences, workshops and training demonstrations as well as produce UC Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources (DANR) publications and internet materials that summarize research that the workgroup conducts. In addition, the Workgroup pursues means and opportunities for increasing the adoption of conservation tillage in California.
Delta Conservation Demonstration Center (DCDC) Established
The vision of DCDC is to see all surface water in the Delta become Clean and Clear and the Natural Resources in the Delta enhanced and protected for generations to come. DCDC activities are divided into 6 areas: Farm, Communications, Facility Use, Curriculum Development, Farm Labor Training, and Program Development.
The mission of the Georgia Conservation Tillage Alliance is to promote the adoption of conservation tillage and other economically viable and environmentally sound agricultural and natural resource management practices through research, education, and communication.
Innovative Cropping Systems Incentive Program (ICS) Established 1996
ICS is a cooperative program that strives to furnish incentives that advance cropping management systems that offer efficiencies in crop production and enhance pollution reduction performance. ICS adoption incentives include outreach, technical transfer, education, demonstration, research, cooperation, development, partnerships and financial assistance.
Manitoba-North Dakota Zero Tillage Farmer's Association Established 1982
The purpose of the Association is to facilitate the exchange of ideas, to encourage zero tillage research and to disseminate zero tillage information. The Association pledges to preserve our agricultural soil resource for future generations by promoting a system of crop production which drastically reduces soil erosion and builds up organic matter.
No-Till on the Plains, Inc. is devoted to educating producers about how to develop economically, agronomically, and environmentally sound crop production systems through the application of continuous no-till farming techniques. This regional organization hosts numerous events each year throughout the Great Plains including bus tours, field days, and one of the largest continuous no-till conferences in North America.
The Ohio No-Till Council puts on a one-day conference in December and a field day in August. The Council is also one of the sponsors of the Conservation Tillage & Technology Conference (CTC), February 21-22, 2008 in Ada, Ohio.
Pacific Northwest Direct Seed Association Established
To provide Pacific Northwest farmers with information exchange, advocacy on conservation policy issues and research coordination that will assure adoption of economically viable and environmentally sustainable direct seed cropping systems.
A producer-led organization governed by an 11-member board of directors and dedicated to the promotion and adoption of no-till production in all areas crop production.
Saskatchewan Soil Conservation Association Estabilshed 1987
The Saskatchewan Soil Conservation Association (SSCA) was formed in 1987 by a group of producers who saw the need to increase the public's awareness of soil conservation and to share soil conservation information with others. The SSCA is a non-profit, producer-based organization whose mission is "to promote conservation production systems that improves the land and environment for future generations." The Association's motto is "Farming for your Future Environment." The SSCA currently has approximately 800 active farmer members. SSCA is a registered charity.
Soil Conservation Council of Canada Conseil de Conservation des sols Canada
The Soil Conservation Council of Canada (SCCC) is a non-government, producer directed organization that is the face and voice for soil conservation in Canada. Our national network is a collaboration that involves; provincial soil conservation associations, non-government organizations, industry and government.
Southern Plains Agricultural Resources Coalition (SPARC) Established 2006
The Southern Plains Agricultural Resources Coalition will spark rural sustainability and profitability through greater use of no-till practices and conservation systems for producers, consumers, and communities by promotion of market based incentives, education, demonstration, participation, and research.
National Soil Tilth Laboratory USDA Agricultural Research Service Established 1989
Research laboratory within the USDA-ARS organization charged with conducting research on farming systems and their impact on air, soil, and water quality. Multidisciplinary research teams address problems using multiple scales of studies that range from basic laboratory analyses of soils to watershed and regional assessment of farming systems impacts on environmental quality and production efficiency.
